Facing Schwerzmann’s paintings, the spectator’s eye is captivated by the near physical vibrations of the color on the canvas’ surface. This intense visual attraction inevitably provokes a physical shift of the observer who attempts, in vain, to seek a point of focus on which to settle: each element on the canvas attracts and returns one’s gaze at the same time.
The smooth surface, even when monochrome, turns out to be entirely unstable, simultaneously producing fascination and irritation. Sight becomes attention, leading the body and awakening the mind:
« Painting, to me, is like thinking, it is a movement » says Schwerzmann.
