Pierre André Ferrand's artistic practice never ceases to question the circumstances of an image’s apparition and the illusionist nature of painting. To do so, the artist develops his own conception of painting through intentionally poor mediums: he rejects all representation (either figurative or abstract) and for many he exlusively used white gesso. Silent, his works condense space, capture the light and retain one’s gaze, concentrated and intesifying. They seem to articulate an utterance, further reinforced by their isolation in the places in which they are exhibited.
Gradually, the artist innovates and his works presented by series evolve. He uses slightly concave or convex frames to give volume to the canvas, varies the clearness of the paint, introduces solid color and makes incisions on the canvas. Each step is a turning point in an intimate and yet universal quest: to invoke a yet invisible presence.
“In the memory the dream of an absolute image recurs. An image preceding images. A simple, concrete image, but illuminated from within, and nonetheless unknowable. ” (P.A. Ferrand)
