Co-founder of the M/2 space in Vevey, Robert Ireland’s pictorial production is built on a succession of experiments in which the image reveals itself as it is laboured, through the process of imprints, contact and loss of control over the final outcome of the painting. Each piece takes form simultaneously for the artist and itself.
The endless questioning of these proposals revolves around the notion of the two-dimensional plane as a utopic space, a place of open projection, beyond its materiality. It is ultimately the painting, as well as all its captivating history, which are investigated, reinterpreted in their founding elements, their permanence and origin.
