Melissa Steckbauer

Melissa Steckbauer was born in Tucson, USA, in 1980. She lives and works in Berlin.

Melissa Steckbauer was a member of the collaborative artist network ƒƒ, and founding director of the exhibition space, The Wand, she lives and works in Berlin. For the last several years – and after a comprehensive focus on painting – she has been developing a body of work on paper, exploring all of the facets and complexities of this medium.

In her work, the paper becomes an “image-bearer”, a delicate support, a lace of emotions. The material itself opens, is split. Paper is lined with paper, coupled with complex geometrical shapes; indeed, it sometimes struggles to carry its own weight. Steckbauer’s works are filled with the people in her direct proximity and through her work she spreads their voices, bodies, and these consequent relationships like seeds. However, her work is not as much about intimacy as it is about an idea of sharing, in a physical, psychological, and silent way.
